Tantrums are very common in toddlers. As a veteran mom who isn’t new to motherhood, this is something that I have had to deal with numerous times. Even though toddlers are still young, they also have feelings but sometimes they don’t know how to deal with them. So, instead of scolding them, it’s important to find ways to fine-tune their emotions. This could involve an ignore tactic or positive response.

First-time moms may not know this but tantrums come in different forms. It might be a disorganized behavior, anger explosions, and violent screams among others. Be prepared to experience loud cries, kicks, etc. There are also rare cases in which your child may vomit or get aggressive and break things. But why do kids throw tantrums?

Causes of Tantrums

Tantrums are actually natural behaviors. The main causes are usually unmet desires or needs. It could also be as a result of fatigue, sickness, or hunger. As much as they get 8 or more hours of sleep, eat, and play with no worries about bills, toddlers will still throw tantrums because they have to unleash the turmoil that’s inside them.

How to Deal with Tantrums

Tantrums normally begin between 12-18 months and peaks between 2-3 years. But it’s possible to lessen and manage them. One of the challenges that most parents face is dealing with toddler tantrums in public but it’s still important to find ways to navigate through these issues. Some of the best ways of dealing with tantrums are:

Avoid Intervening

This is sometimes applicable in public or when you have friends around. Some kids have the tendency of throwing tantrum in front of guests or public because they know it’s not possible for you to scold them. Once you notice that the baby is doing this, fully ignore them (if they are not endangering others or themselves physically). Either walk out if you are in a room or step aside to give them space. But if they start hitting, biting, or kicking, remove them from that environment and make it clear that self-harm is not allowed.

Speak Calmly

A toddler can throw tantrums by yelling or crying out loudly. In most cases, the parent may be tempted to match their volume. Well, this is wrong because you can’t engage each other when you are both loud. I know for a fact that when my baby yells loudly, I should tone down. This is because tantrums are a way of them telling you that they are frustrated and need your help in order to calm down. The best you can do is to offer a better solution. Do not shout but speak softly to them.

Tip: Never engage in a yelling match with a toddler because you will never win

Find Distractions

This is one of the best ways of dealing with tantrums in toddlers. Kids usually have a very short attention span and you can easily distract them. if my kid wants to play computer games and it is late, I instead try to distract them by reading for them a bedtime story. Starting a new activity is good because it helps them to forget what they wanted initially. Sometimes it’s also important to change the environment.

Give Them Positive Attention

Well, by now you know that these are normal issues which toddlers have to display occasionally. However, it’s important to understand that you are dealing with a child who will one day grow to be an adult. Therefore, important to sometimes give them positive attention. For instance, when your child behaves well, always encourage and support positive behavior. Additionally, give them control or alternatives. For instance, if you deny them orange juice and they start to throw tantrums, ask them if they want apple juice. You can even ask them when they want to sleep, eat, brush etc. Allowing them to have control over a few little things helps them to feel like they are in charge. It’s also important to advise them on how to deal with frustration or anger in a calm manner.

Motherhood isn’t easy. While tantrums can sometimes be very hard to handle, you need to use effective tactics in order to lessen them. Do not complicate the situation with your own personal issues and try to be as cool as possible
