Whether you are just visiting your relatives, going to the countryside or taking an exotic babymoon, it’s possible to comfortably travel during pregnancy. But for most new moms, this can be a challenging experience. Personally, I ended up getting overwhelmed because of the wrong timing. Additionally, sitting in the wrong place meant that I had problems accessing the washrooms. But a couple of times later, I have learned that travelling locally or internationally can be an amazing experience but only if you equip yourself with the necessary information. If you are an expectant woman, below are some of the beneficial tips and tricks that you can find effective.

1. Time the Trip

Timing is very important for pregnancy travel. For instance, my first trimester was full of morning sickness and nausea. Most women normally experience this as well. The third trimester means that you bump is now bigger and a little uncomfortable. To be on the safer side, I recommend pregnancy travel during the second trimester. Traveling on my fast trimester meant that I had to constantly take my anti-nausea drugs which produced additional side effects. The mid-trimester is more comfortable and allows you to travel comfortably before the young one arrives.

2. Carefully Choose the Destination

This is very important especially if you are going for international travel. Research on the area and its risk in relation to foodborne diseases, air quality, transport, water, and security. One of the first things that I did before embarking on my international travel was to consult with my doctor first. I learned that it’s important to avoid countries which provide travel vaccinations to expectant moms. This is because the vaccine may interfere with fetal development and cause deformities. Additionally, areas with zika virus and prone to tropical diseases such as malaria should be avoided.

3. Pack Adequate Fluids and Healthy Snacks

One thing I love about traveling domestically is that I can pack my drinks and snacks. If you are planning pregnancy travel locally, I recommend that you should take with you some home-based edibles which are safe and healthy for you and the baby. This helps to reduce your chances of suffering allergic reactions or stomach upsets.

4. Update the Medical Portfolio and Travel Kit

Just like when you are traveling with a newborn, it’s important to update your medical travel kit and portfolio. A medical portfolio is your medical record and it’s vital in case you suffer from emergencies or allergies. The main reason why I recommend this is that there are some instances where you may fail to speak and this will help responders to easily deal with your situation. When it comes to the medical kit, ensure that it has all the essential drugs that you might need. Suffering from morning sickness for a better part of my pregnancy, my travel kit always had anti-nausea as well as prenatal vitamins. This made the whole pregnancy travel seamless because I could combat the symptoms of nausea before they could manifest.

5. Have Travel Insurance

Note: Travel insurance doesn’t cover the pregnancy as well as childbirth because it’s a pre-existing condition.

Whether you are traveling locally or internationally, getting a travel insurance helps to cater to the medical bills that may arise as a result of pregnancy or other health complications. Apart from nausea, another health problem that I experienced during my travel was swollen legs. I couldn’t sleep or sit and ended up getting admitted. With the travel insurance, I was able to effectively take care of all the medical costs without getting financially drained. Most expectant moms are usually sensitive and traveling to a new environment can change the way the hormones function. Arming yourself with this insurance can help to reduce the overall medical costs.

When Should Expecting Women Stop Traveling?

It’s safe for most women to travel during pregnancy as long as your health and that of the fetus are good. Medically, it’s safe to travel till you reach 36 weeks or even 37 weeks. In case you are expecting twins, then the 32-week mark is fine. Traveling by road, sea or flying isn’t harmful to your baby, especially if you have a low-risk pregnancy. However, you may experience some side effects.
